Journey to Promote Mental Health
A Training Series for Community Workers Serving Immigrants and Refugees
Settlement workers are often the first point of contact for newcomers. Moreover, when newcomers are in need of help, they typically approach settlement workers for advice and assistance. Journey to Promote Mental Health is a training series designed for settlement workers to enhance their knowledge of mental health and highlight coping strategies to address the potential challenges newcomers face.
Expected Outcomes:
- Increase knowledge of mental health issues and migration
- Develop early identification knowledge of mental health problems and mental illness
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients
- Become equipped with prevention and early-intervention tools
- Enhance understanding of the mental health system and community mental health resources
- Strengthen a cultural humility approach in addressing and intervening in mental health issues
- Understand different culturally competent approaches
- Enhance compassionate communication with newcomers
- Increase the awareness of self-care as service providers
Cultural Humility Training
Cultural Humility Training
Cultural Humility Care is a crucial service component for anyone supporting diverse communities, helping service providers deliver quality care that is respectful, effective, and grounded in understanding.
The vast majority of diverse populations understand mental health concepts differently, which has a direct impact on their help-seeking behaviour and their choice of treatments. Structural inequalities such as discrimination and racism can both create and exacerbate vulnerability.
HF Care recognizes the cultural and linguistic challenges faced by many, resulting in difficulties in navigating the health and mental health systems. This Cultural Humility Training includes two levels: the Fundamental Training and the Advanced Training.
The Fundamental Training is open to all and establishes a baseline knowledge foundation for progression to the Advanced Training.
The Advanced Training includes three modules, which are:
- Training for frontline staff to increase awareness, understanding and reflection of personal biases and how that influences treatment and care toward clients;
- Training for management staff to enhance organizational awareness, policies, and practices needed to ensure the delivery of culturally competent care in collaboration with clients and communities.
- Training for the governance-level to strengthen awareness of the policy-making role in prioritizing diversity, equity, and culturally competent care across all governance and strategic documents
Workplace Wellness Training
Workplace pressures can create stress for employees and, in turn, affect productivity. A study by the Mental Health Commission of Canada in 2010 found that 82% of organizations ranked mental health conditions among the top three causes of short-term disability (72% for long-term disability).
HF Care’s Workplace Wellness Training is designed to bridge the gap between employers and employees by promoting healthier, more supportive work environments. Through group discussions, role-play, case studies, and interactive seminars, participants learn practical ways to address stress, emotions, and mental health challenges.
This training helps organizations reduce sick days, stress-related absences, and turnover, while fostering mutual respect, productivity, and collaboration.
This training has been delivered to both non-profit agencies and the for-profit sector, including banks and large restaurants.
